9 tips on how to stretch your food and save money !

Some of these are based on my experience working at a vegan restaurant.

1. Chuck those deuces up! When you order a smoothie, ask for it in two cups and get one wrapped up to go. You can be satisfied with half now and the other half later. Additionally, you can tuck the second half away in your bag without having to walk around the city with a cup all day.

2. Similarly if you order a sandwich or a wrap, ask for it to be cut in half and wrapped individually, or half to stay and half to go. Enjoy the first half now and save the rest for later! There’s also something subconscious about going for the wrapped half—the few extra seconds more it takes to unwrap it may give you enough time to say, I’m full, I’ll save it for later like I intended.

3. Make a promise to a friend! If you’re on your way to see someone and you’re tempted by a treat, LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE BRINGING IT TO THEM. You can’t eat it if it’s for someone else. We have an easier time keeping promises to other than we do to ourselves.

4. Drink water with your food. I don’t know why Caribbean parents are against drinking with dinner. smh!

5. Before you eat, take a moment and think: will this make me feel like shit later? Works for me!

6. Restaurants can ALWAYS make adjustments. Ask for extra lettuce and tomato—it’s usually free. Ask for gluten-free or no sauce of salad style or light on the tofu—it’s really no problem and you won’t miss the extra calories.

7. Eating in NY does not have to be expensive. See all those fruit carts outside? If you’re low on cash, eat fruit for a meal or for the whole day and see how full you get off of such little money. And be sure to be near a bathroom.

8. Eat better today to live to see tomorrow. I know organic and other healthy food can be expensive but is surely rather pay 1.50 extra for avocado than pay 1.50 for a whole cheeseburger that will clog my arteries. Think about it.

9. Please throw that don’t eat past ___PM crap in the trash. That “rule” was made up to get you to just stop eating less, period.

10. BONUS! If you think any of these tips sound hard or impossible, shut they voice off in your brain immediately. You are capable of doing ANYTHING. You do not need to live by any rules you’ve grown up with or always have known. Change your mindset, change your life, love yourself.
